Edit - Tru Oil IS a pain to apply between frets if it is a maple board. No problem on back & sides of a neck with rosewood or unfinished board. WebApr 19, 2011 · North Bay, Ca. I have been letting each coat dry for 24 hours, then using 0000 steel wool before the next coat. Would sanding with 800 or 1000 be better ? Will the Tru Oil eventually build up and level out. There are still small pore marks.

Put a half cup of odorless mineral spirits in a small bowl for lube and start with fresh sharp 800 or 600 grit SiC paper on a hard flat backer and go to town. Get it over with and start again - with the cat in another room. WebAug 10, 2024 · Try 800G as a starting paper. If it's not leveling you may have to go down to 600G. If everything has been done correctly you shouldn't need to go down to anything coarser. Tru oil isn't my usual finish but I can get all the coats on in just over one day and get it to full gloss the next day, so 3 days. I do have a drying cabinet though.
WebJan 12, 2013 · When preparing samples, try changing the sequence of the stain coats. Do one in order: shade 1 (allow to dry), shade 2 (allow to dry) then shade 3. Do the next in reverse order: 3, 2, 1. Then mix it up: 2, 3, 1 and finally 2, 1, 3. The appearance of each sample should be slightly (or noticeably) unique. WebFirst thing I would do is give it a wipe with mineral spirits and then let it dry. That alone may do quite a lot to reduce the visibility. Then rub in a very light coat of Tru-Oil, thinned if necessary with some MS. I'd be very surprised if that doesn't resolve the issue. (that's assuming you did the same tru-oil method as I did, wet sanding from 220 grit upwards using the oil, getting gradually finer with the paper until you can polish it).

Gramps, Try taking a piece of canvas with some straight linseed on it and buff/burnish the heck out of the stock. As you complete the buff in certain areas with the wet canvas, buff dry with a dry piece of canvas, denim, etc. Synthetic steel wool works as well.
